Some people tell me - not to think about politics
They spit it out like it’s a crude word,
“Politics”
Apparently, I’m “too young” to wonder about what’s to come
“Too young” to be wasting my time on things besides grades
“Too young” to join the conversation.
Okay.
Aren’t I “too young,” then,
To be thinking about a college major
“Too young” to be deciding my job for the next 40 years
“Too young” to be standing before you,
Reciting poetry I’m “too young” to write,
In the city on a Tuesday night?
And yet here we are.
Let me introduce you to my generation
The kids who are getting stuff done
We’re the ones people doubted would do anything,
but we’re the ones who future is being handed off to
We see how backward this thing we call life is
Where people care more about players tackling players
Than cops tackling kids
No more facing injustice ‘cause of the color of your skin
So don’t doubt us because of the iPhones, iPads,
I can make a revolution with a swipe of my hand
We’re done with crazy situations being the basis of our nation
And sure, I’m 15, don’t even have a license
Running over potholes
Lord knows, I ain’t know how to drive
Sittin’ behind the wheel with some smoke in my eyes
My name hasn’t yet gone down in history,
But I’ll get there, it ain’t no mystery
Even this poem’s a masterpiece lyrically
I’m Socrates, hopping through all these philosophies,
Wait and see, someone’s gonna write my biography
Fix this democracy, it’s a monstrosity
At this point, complicity is the only enemy
But look at his face, he can’t handle my velocity
Like oh, damn, this chick has some audacity
I’ll slow it down for you
Don’t want to hurt your brain
But just know, my generation’s a hurricane
Mercy?
I have none.
I only ask that you remember,
That I will never be “too young.”
